Jongomero Camp is a remote camp in the heart of the Ruaha National Park on the banks of the seasonal Jongomero sand river which flows strongly during the rains, but is usually just sand during the dry season. Situated along the Jongomero River in the far south of the park, Jongomero Camp is far from any other camp. The scenery is quite dramatic with tall Brachystegia trees forming a continuous woodland home to some specialist species of antelope such as the magnificent sable and several miombo-dwelling birds.
What makes Jongomero Tented Camp Special?
Jongomero Tented Camp is set right at the bottom of the Ruaha National Park making it more remote and secluded than any other lodge within the park. The camp blends beautifully with its surroundings, tucked below a dappled riverine canopy on the banks of the Jongomero sand river - a natural pathway for animals in search of water. It is the only lodge in the park at this level that has a swimming pool which, in the Ruaha summertime, is an absolute godsend.
In 2008 the Usangu Game Reserve merged with Ruaha National Park becoming, at 20 200 km2, one of the largest national parks in Tanzania. Only a handful of camps are located within the gates of this park, so it has the reputation of being Tanzania’s best-kept game viewing secret.
The Great Ruaha River, from which the park gets its name, is by far its most dominant geographical feature. The ecosystem in the national park represents a transition zone between the miombo woodlands common in Zambia, and the more open savannah typical of northern Tanzania and Kenya. With the unique location of the Ruaha intersecting so many diverse habitats, notable unusual sightings include wild dog, sable antelope, roan antelope, Lichtenstein’s hartebeest and lesser kudus. Ruaha is home to the largest population of elephants in East Africa, with over 10 000 elephants roaming the park each year, as well as healthy populations of lion and buffalo.
Jongomero Camp comprises 8 spacious and well-appointed tented suites built on raised wooden platforms under enormous thatched roofs which also encompass a spacious private veranda overlooking the riverbed. The main and lounge area is similarly luxurious, with polished wooden floors, comfortable sofas and Persian rugs. The natural swimming pool in the river is a hippo-free spot where guests can cool down and perhaps spot some animals doing the same.
Children over the age of 6 are welcome.
The large open-sided dining tent offers a relaxed place in which to enjoy an elegant buffet, incorporating international cuisine as well as local East African flavours. Al fresco dinners under the stars, campfire cooking, and classic safari picnics offer memorable and unique dining experiences.
The bar area overlooks the sand river and offers beautiful views of the surroundings, creating a comfortable place to relax after an exciting day while taking in the scenery.
Jongomero Camp is the only camp in the area where guests will enjoy many outdoor activities without coming across another safari vehicle. Twice-daily game drives provide you with wonderful sightings of Africa’s abundance of wildlife as you’re taken through the varied landscapes, which include open plains, thick bush, rivers and acacia woodlands. Guests over the age of 16 can enjoy a game walk which is arguably the most fascinating way to truly experience the wonders of Ruaha.
