Kalahari Plains Camp is like no other place on earth. It is set in one of the most isolated places on earth, and combines a beautiful wildlife experience with some of the most striking scenery in the world.
What makes Kalahari Plains Camp special?
One of the unique experiences offered at the Kalahari Plains Camp is the opportunity to learn more about the fascinating ways in which the local San (Bushmen) people, the Baswara, survive in such extreme conditions. They have lived here for thousands of years, and their connection to the natural world borders on the super-natural. Interaction with this nomadic, hunter-gatherer culture is a fascinating experience.
The Central Kalahari game reserve is one of the largest protected wildlife areas on the planet. From November through to April every year, the dessert blooms and transforms completely into a lush green plain, interspersed with forests and woodland. Migrations of wildebeest, springbok and Oryx converge on the rolling plains, and there is a brief moment of plenty in the otherwise cruel battle for survival that defines life in the Kalahari. The Kalahari Plains Camp is situated perfectly on the banks of a large pan, close to Deception Valley, the most famous game viewing area in the whole of the Kalahari. It is an ancient riverbed - long dried up - but surrounded by sweet grasses and seasonal waterholes. The black-maned Kalahari lion calls this area home, and watching one of these majestic animals appear from the inky blackness of a Kalahari night is an experience of a lifetime. Cheetah thrive here on the open flat landscape, and nocturnal animals like aardwolf, aardvark and the rare brown hyena prosper too, making it an area well renowned for viewing animals seldom seen in other parts of Africa.
Kalahari Plains Camp is situated in the largest stretch of sand in the world, and is entirely run off solar power. Each of the 10 comfortable tented suites is well equipped and luxurious, and has a raised sleeping deck that is perfect for star-gazing and sleeping under the most beautiful night sky to be found anywhere on earth. The roofs of the tents were specially designed to keep in heat during chilly winter nights, but also insulate the rooms from the severity of the midday Kalahari sun in summer. The en-suite rooms all have a shaded salas that are perfect for waiting out the heat of the day. The main camp is shady with a well-stocked bar, but as soon as the sun sets, the desert night can have a bite to it, making the cosy campfire a real treat.
In the heat of the Kalahari sun, the camp’s swimming pool in the main area is fantastic. One of the undisputed highlights of the Kalahari is the incredible night sky, and the main deck of the camp is well equipped for this. The knowledgeable guides are able to navigate guests around the Milky Way, aided with telescopes and spotting scopes. Anyone who gazes at the stars in the Kalahari will never be able to look up into the night skies in the same way again.
The camp offers 2 game drives each day, where the vast expanse of the Kalahari is explored, and its secrets revealed. It is a surprising landscape – with sand dunes, forests, lily-filled waterholes and mirages surprising you at every turn. In the cooler months it is possible to head out for all day excursions, heading back just before sunset, in time to listen as the jackals begin their eerie night time calls.
