Mnemba Island is a small island located approximately 2km off the north-east coast of Unguja, the largest island of the Zanzibar Archipelago, opposite Matemwe Beach. Mnemba is roughly triangular and around 1.5km in circumference, surrounded by reefs which have been declared a Marine Conservation Area. Mnemba Island is one of the best scuba-diving sites in Zanzibar, with a wide variety of corals, turtles, three species of dolphins, whale sharks and approximately 600 species of coral reef fish.
Humpback whales visit between July and September and the island is a nesting place of the threatened green turtle.These prehistoric creatures can be seen laying their eggs on the beaches throughout the year, with ‘turtle season’ peaking between April and August. Within nine weeks the beaches are scattered with tiny turtle hatchlings. Mnemba is a fisherman’s paradise, with catch-and-release game fishing and fly-fishing, and deep-sea fishing at extra cost.
The architecture and décor of Mnemba Island Lodge is ‘shipwreck chic’ with high thatch roofs, ornate furniture carved by local artisans and elegant furniture. Ten luxury bandas dot the perfect white sand beach while traditional white Zanzibari beach beds wait on the sand. A covered walkway leads to a shuttered en-suite bathroom with huge glass-beaded shower curtains. Thatched dining and bar areas boast beautiful open views of the beach.
Baskets of fresh fruit, lobsters, crabs and prawns sail into Mnemba daily on traditional ngalawa outriggers. Lunch is often served on large wooden carved Zanzibari platters heaped with delicious mezze.
