The two luxurious lodges at Royal Chundu are situated on a private stretch of the Zambezi River in Zambia, just 30 kilometers upstream of the majestic Victoria Falls. The lodges have been highly acclaimed for their all-encompassing luxury, superb service, sublime cuisine and spectacular setting, making them the perfect choice for adventurers who want to experience Zambia in style.

What makes Royal Chundu special?

Royal Chundu is the only lodge in Zambia to not share its waterways with any other lodge, meaning that guests can embark on remarkably secluded explorations of a beautiful 15 kilometre stretch of river. Daily sundowner cruises are included in the rates. Decadent riverside picnics, along with some of the best tiger fishing and bird-watching in Africa, are also on offer. Guests can easily take tours to the Victoria Falls or some of the colourful local villages, and can be assured of returning to a place of absolute peace, comfort and indulgence. Children of all ages are very well catered for, with the Children’s Club hosting a variety of tailor-made activities just for the little ones.

The Setting

River Lodge, the larger of Royal Chundu’s two lodges, sits underneath huge riverine trees facing a wide expanse of the Zambezi River.

Four kilometres upstream, the intimate Island Lodge has an even more remote and beautiful setting, occupying its own private island in the middle of the water. Protected by a set of rapids at either end, the river is bounded by impressive trees, attracting a myriad of bird and animal life, which is best seen on the daily cruises. The fiery tigerfish, more than willing to take an angler’s offerings, are here in abundance too.

The Zambian side of Victoria Falls,  otherwise known as ‘The Smoke that Thunders’, is a short drive away from Royal Chundu, allowing guests to experience why this is one of the earth’s greatest natural wonders. There are a variety of wonderful activities at the Falls. A sunset cruise allows you to get up close and personal with their immense power from the safety of a luxury boat. For the more intrepid, the bungee jump off the bridge is the second-highest in the world, with a view of the gorge below that makes leaping 110 meters into thin air one the most heart-pumping activities possible.

The Lodges

River Lodge offers 10 thatched river-front suites, luxuriously-appointed with King-size beds, fans, mini bars, tea/coffee stations, safes and spacious double showers. Each suite has a deck with magnificent views over the surging river. Life revolves around the main lodge, which has a swimming pool, bar, wine cellar, TV lounge, library and wireless internet. A lovely outdoor boma under the trees sets a wonderful scene for outdoor dinners and drinks around the fire.

Surrounded by towering baobabs and jackalberry trees on the private Kitambora Island, Island Lodge is an exclusive-use haven sleeping between four and six guests. The villas are immensely spacious and appointed with all the same amenities as River Lodge, while the main lodge area has two lounges, a dining room and an infinity pool, as well as an outdoor boma.

At both lodges, two single beds can be added to the suites to accommodate extra children.

The Experience

Royal Chundu is well-suited for both adventure seekers and those who appreciate life’s indulgent luxuries. Waking up to the tranquil sound of the river flowing by, guests start their day with a sublime breakfast, accompanied by a picturesque view of the water. Royal Chundu’s cuisine is of world-class quality and pushes the boundaries of innovation, but stays true to the rich culture of Africa.

To fill up the day, adventurous guests can head to Victoria Falls for a spectacular outing, try their hand at tigerfishing or go canoeing down the Zambezi.

Those looking for romance can arrange a private riverside picnic complete with Persian carpets, hammocks and decadent treats, or organise a soothing spa treatment.

To experience the customs of the Zambian people, take a boat trip to one of the villages downstream, where a smiling villager will greet you and introduce you to the community.

Adults who want to spend some quality time together can leave their kids with childminders. Each child at Royal Chundu receives a special River Safari Adventure Pack on arrival, while a scheduled daily programme will keep them busy with everything from treasure hunts to games.
