Situated in the western part of the reserve amongst densely wooded hills , and overlooking a private (and very popular) waterhole, Phinda Zuka Lodge is your own private holiday home in Africa.

With just four thatched Zululand bush cottages, this intimate lodge is ideal as an exclusive use lodge (although it can be booked separately). With a team of welcoming staff completely at your disposal, feel free to create your own authentic African experience. Characterised by hues of blue and stone, with a strong emphasis on shape and texture, Zuka Lodge’s overall ambiance is that of cool, coastal bush style embodying the sophistication of simplicity. The charming cottages cluster around a busy waterhole where a diversity of wildlife is regularly seen and birdlife flourishes.

Phinda Private Game Reserve encompasses an impressive 23 000 hectares of protected wildlife land and has a strong focus on conservation and community involvement. The reserve is particularly well known for close-up sightings of the elegant, yet elusive cheetah, as well as the rare black rhino. Cheetah, lion and leopard are tracked on the reserve on a daily basis and guests have a high likelihood of encountering these magnificent animals.

With its seven distinct habitats, Phinda is often described as ‘Seven Worlds of Wonder’, a magnificent tapestry of woodland, grassland, wetland and forest, interspersed with mountain ranges, rivers, marshes and pans. It is much more than just another Big Five reserve.

Each cottage boasts a luxurious oversized bathtub set in a circular stone bath chamber and has its own private sitting room, those in the two main suites looking out on the watering hole. Comfortable lounge chairs on private verandas allow for gentle contemplation or even an afternoon siesta. Guest areas include an interactive café-style kitchen, indoor sitting and dining areas, an intimate library with Internet access and a sparkling swimming pool with an extended wooden deck overlooking the waterhole and the surrounding wilderness.

African hospitality means treating each guest as though your house were his own. At the sole-use Phinda Zuka Lodge, everything you need is right within reach - your personal game ranger and game drive vehicle, an interactive kitchen with a dedicated chef, a butler to see to your daily needs, a comfortable library with Internet access and TV for the children, a sitting room with a fireplace for evening chats, your own swimming pool and even a private watering hole for your own exclusive wildlife encounters.

With no set timetable or routine, you can encounter the wonders of the bush at your own pace and leisure. Savour the luxury of choice at this relaxed lodge - choose an early morning game drive or sleep a little late. With a dedicated ranger and vehicle on standby, game drives are tailored just for you. Your personal chef awaits in the interactive kitchen, so choose your own menu or opt to be surprised. Join in the cooking or give instructions and watch your favourite recipes take shape! Indulge in banter at the large dining table or enjoy an alfresco meal in the garden boma.

Many of the highly trained professional rangers and trackers belong to the surrounding Zulu communities and can share cultural insights in addition to their incomparable wealth of wildlife knowledge.

Interpretive game drives at your convenience in your private open 4x4 safari vehicle ensure excellent Big Five game viewing, with spectacular sightings of the elusive cheetah, the rare black rhino and the abundant wildlife and birdlife. Evening game drives last until after dark, when spotlights are used for a glimpse into the nocturnal bush life. Listen to lions roar in the dark or admire the small nocturnal animals. Children aged 6 to 11 are permitted on game drives at the lodge manager’s discretion.

If you prefer, you could go on a boat cruise or canoe down the Mzinene River, watching the wildlife as they come down to drink.

Enjoy bush walks (not for children under 16) accompanied by your ranger, who will share his insight into the smaller animals, insects and vegetation in the area.
