Chitwa Chitwa is one of the most stylish lodges in the spectacular Sabi Sands Game Reserve, and offers access to 5 500 hectares of unspoilt African bushveld teeming with iconic African wildlife. The lodge is built around one of the largest lakes in the reserve, and offers superb game viewing and exacting standards of luxury. Unusually for a luxury bushveld establishment, the lodge happily accommodates children of all ages.

What makes Chitwa Chitwa special?

The foremost attraction at Chitwa Chitwa is the game viewing, which ranks right up there with the best in Africa. Rarely will guests be disappointed at what they see on the guided game drives or bush walks, which are conducted by experienced rangers with a deep affectioni for the bush. Some supremely relaxed game viewing can be had from the sun-decks of each chalet, overlooking the lake. Excursions to the nearby village of Dixie are also available for those who want to experience the rich cultural heritage of the Shangaan people. With sublime cuisine and a range of fantastic facilities, Chitwa Chitwa is perfect for the nature lover who appreciates life’s little luxuries.

The Reserve

Unfenced from the Kruger National Park, the 65 000 hectare Sabi Sands Game Reserve is the birthplace of sustainable tourism in Africa and is arguably South Africa’s greatest game viewing destination.

Particularly well-known for its dense concentration of leopards, other wildlife is prolific and, since hunting was abolished decades ago, the animals have become completely comfortable around game drive vehicles. Big Five animals abound, along with cheetah, wild dog and more than 50 other mammals. The lake in front of Chitwa Chitwa is a magnet for these creatures and a vast array of birds, while the large traversing area is home to landscapes that transition from open plains, to dense woodland, riverine forests and classic bushveld.

The Lodge

The lodge is beautifully integrated into the natural environment, with the lake providing a superb focal point for guests. The open-plan design blends the indoors with the outdoors, and the décor is a stylish mix between contemporary chic and African earthiness. Colourful art pieces and sculptures add a compelling visual appeal to the luxury atmosphere.

The stylish main lounge and dining areas lead out to a swimming pool and deck with panoramic views over the waterhole. A library with internet access, a boutique shop, gym and spa add to the list of amenities.

The six luxurious suites each have their own sun-deck and plunge pool facing the lake. Immensely spacious, the suites are individually-decorated and boast luxuries such as fireplaces, tea/coffee facilities, minibars, fans, hairdryers and iPod docking stations. Indoor and outdoor showers, along with a deep bathtub, give guests the freedom to choose how they want to wash off the dust after a wonderful day’s game viewing. The suites can each house an extra two beds for children under the age of 12, while the Charlsy Suite has two appointed inter-leading rooms joined by a comfortable living area.

For a highly exclusive experience, groups of four can book out Chitwa House, which comes with a house butler and private ranger. A private chef can be arranged on request.

The Experience

Sunrise at Chitwa Chitwa is greeted by a warming cup of coffee or tea, before guests head out for a game drive. The diurnal animals of the bush are also waking up, and can be seen going about their morning routines in the soft light. Game drives are made particularly special by the lodge’s rangers, who are some of the most knowledgeable in the reserve and are dedicated to ensuring that every expectation of an African safari is surpassed. Children over the age of 6 are permitted to join adults on safaris, while families with younger children can book exclusive use of a vehicle.

After an extensive breakfast, energetic guests or those who have opted to sleep in can depart on a guided walk through the bush, coming face-to-face with wildlife, birds, plants, insects and spoor. Guided trips to the village can also depart at this time.

In the hours before lunch, the swimming pool and sundeck, as well as the beautifully-appointed spa, beckon to be tested out.

A spell-binding afternoon safari, complete with sundowners and a night drive, completes the wildlife encounters for the day. Aperetifs are followed up by a sumptuous dinner served in locations ranging from the thatched lapa, to the fire-lit boma or the elegant dining room.
