What makes Westcliff Hotel special?

Filled with large trees and tranquil gardens, the Westcliff grounds provide a tranquil break from the rigours of the city. The hotel  boasts excellent facilities such as a spa, gym, a lap pool and family pool, as well as five world-class dining venues. A 24-hour concierge service is on hand to deal with travel needs, recommending places of interest and booking transport on your behalf. The hotel also caters excellently for families, providing a complimentary children’s activities programme, baby-sitting and a kids menu. Before their stay, guests can inform the hotel of the names and ages of their children, who will be supplied with a host of goodies on arrival.

Johannesburg

Built on the discovery of gold, Johannesburg remains South Africa’s economic hub, and the country’s biggest city. If you are a foreign visitor to Johannesburg, chances you are on business, or on a layover for a connection elsewhere in Africa. That being the case, there are few more amenable venues to use as a base in the city.

Although Johannesburg is not a tourist destination, there are a few interesting gems to explore. The Westcliff Hotel neighbours the Johannesburg Zoo, which is a wonderful family destination with 2 000 animals and 320 species species of birds on their grouds. A number of world-class golf courses are also situated nearby.

The city centre plays host to various interesting museums, art galleries, theatres and craft markets. A variety of first-world shopping centres, sports stadiums and entertainment venues can be found across the city. If you have the time, a visit to Soweto, which was the epicentre of the anti-apartheid struggles, is a must. The Hector Pietersen Museum, Vilakazi Street and the Mandela House Museum, as well as the nearby Apartheid Museum, Liliesleaf Farm and Constitution Hill, all offer insights into the turbulent past of the country. For a lighter day’s entertainment, head to Gold Reef City for funfair rides, gambling and a fascinating look at how Jo’burg grew from a dusty mining town to become the ‘Big Apple of Africa’.

The Hotel

The hotel has an extensive range of top-end, modern facilities that will meet the desires of every discerning traveller. Dining venues include the showpiece Flames, which serves breakfast, lunch and dinner and boasts the best views to be found anywhere in Johannesburg, especially from the large terrace. Avant-garde contemporary diners can be seduced by the style of the View restaurant, while the streetside Westcliff Deli is a funky place to enjoy light cuisine, beverages and takeaway food. The intimate Cellar Door and the outdoor Apré-Spa bar and lounge, as well as around-the-clock room service, complete the dining options.

With indulgent treatments, a steam room, 25 metre long heated lap pool and a fitness centre equipped with top-end equipment, as well as personal training on request, the hotel is also a haven for health and wellness. The jogging trail is a picturesque place to get some exercise or take a stroll. The lap pool is reserved for adults, but kids can splash around to their hearts’ content in a separate family pool.

Westcliff’s accommodation is divided into premier, deluxe and superior rooms, and suites varying from one-bedroom to the vast, supremely luxurious three-bedroom Royal Suite with a private plunge pool. All the rooms feature terraces with wonderful views over the zoo and suburbs, along with King-size beds, en-suite marble bathrooms, satellite television, iPod docking stations, tea/coffee facilities, mini bars, wireless internet, safes and telephones. Comforting additional touches include a nightly turndown service, twice-daily housekeeping and a complimentary newspaper with your breakfast.

At extra cost, the rooms can be fitted with child-proofing and any supplies needed for the little ones.

The Experience

To start the day, a delicious breakfast is enjoyed in the company of memorable views over the leafy suburbs and zoo. Afterwards, you can walk off the calories in the huge grounds or fitness centre, rejuvenate in the spa or loll around the swimming pools. Allow the concierge service to arrange any activities you have planned for the day, while the children enjoy the varied activities of the Kids For All Seasons programme, which include kite-making, treasure hunts, storytelling, computer games and movies.

Pick and choose from the wide range of dining venues for lunch and dinner, deciding whether you want seafood, traditional grills, light snacks or cheese and wine pairings in the cellar.

Throughout their stay, guests are guaranteed to experience exceptional service at the hands of Westcliff’s large staff team.
