Nestled on the edge of a dam, Cleopatra Mountain Farmhouse is an exceptional gourmet getaway, and is surrounded by rolling hills and breathtaking mountain scenery. Richard and Mouse Poynton and their team provide the ideal environment for relaxation with a uniquely charming atmosphere. Food, fauna, flora, San rock art, walking, birding and riding create memories never to be forgotten.
If it’s top class cuisine, spectacular scenery and tranquillity you’re after, then Cleopatra is for you. This idyllic mountain retreat is renowned for its relaxed style of gourmet farmhouse dining, along with friendly, professional, yet understated service. Children over the age of 12 are welcome.
Tucked away in the Kamberg Valley close to Giant’s Castle Nature Reserve, Cleopatra lies along the Mooi River and shares most of its boundary with Highmoor Nature Reserve. It is the ideal base from which to explore the endless scenic trails of the Drakensberg Mountains. Wildlife includes eland, reedbuck, oribi, jackal, serval, rooikat, extensive birdlife, and there is a huge diversity of flora. The Kamberg Valley, home to the Trout Festival, is one of South Africa's top fishing regions, and Highmoor’s three big trout dams are stocked with rainbow trout. Advance booking is required.
Each of the units at Cleopatra brims with Mouse’s individualistic decorative touches. Five elegant standard rooms each feature an open plan sitting and bedroom area, and overlook the dam. The luxury suites have fireplaces and verandas with beautiful mountain and garden views. The executive suite has its own private lounge with a fireplace, and has mountain and garden views. The standalone cottages are spacious open plan private units, each with its own private veranda overlooking the nearby wetland with glorious mountain views.
Excitingly different, fine gourmet food is prepared from home grown and fresh farm fare by multi-award-winning gourmet chef Richard and his team of dedicated chefs. Dinner is a sumptuous 7-course affair and is paired with South African wines from a bountifully stocked underground cellar. The set menu changes every evening according to the seasons, with imported ingredients of the highest quality adding an exotic slant. Temptingly different 3-course breakfasts and brunch platters or packed picnics round off the mouth-watering bill of fare.
At Cleopatra, relaxation is the order of the day. Sit by the crackling fire with tea and chocolate cake, browse through the ubiquitous family collectibles in the library, or recline with a book and watch the weavers building their nests outside. Lie in a hammock in the tranquil garden or wander through the herb and flower gardens with vegetable potager. You might even be lucky enough to take a cooking class.
The extravagant culinary experience is an incentive to enjoy the many activities in the area, perhaps starting with one of the many walking trails on the farm. A guided nature walk with an expert guide can also be arranged.
Horse riding is available nearby, with 2½ hour rides on Appaloosa horses catering for novice and experienced riders alike. Full and half day tours of local racehorse studs are also offered, and include transport to and from Cleopatra.
Fishing is available in Little Mooi River on the farm, or in the stillwaters at Highmoor and Kamberg. Rods are available for hire. A helicopter is on standby for fantastic flights over the Little Berg to Giants Castle. A landing on top of the Little Berg for a glass of sparkling wine is part of the deal.
