Imagine an unspoilt island within a Marine National Park, deserted beaches of pure white sand that extend for miles, sparkling turquoise seas criss-crossed by local dhows plying their trade, sun-filled days and star-studded nights… and you have Azura Benguerra. Just 16 villas, with all the creature comforts you could wish for, are nestled along one of the last undiscovered stretches of beach in the world.

From seafood fresh from the ocean to a fantastic range of activities and experiences, sparkling private pools, an African spa, and Mozambican butler-hosts who are there to look after your every need, Azura Benguerra is paradise found. To crown it all, Azura Benguerra is a community-based project, where the local islanders benefit as much as you do.

The ultimate tropical island experience, Azura Benguerra is one of the most romantic destinations in the world, as well as being an idyllic family getaway. The offshore reefs are some of the most pristine on the East African coast and offer a plethora of marine life and amazing coral gardens. Scuba diving, snorkelling and big sea fishing are exceptional.

Azura Benguerra is set on the lush tropical island of Benguerra in the Bazaruto Marine National Park, host to protected dugongs and marine turtles. On land, towering sand dunes give way to indigenous bush abundant with local flora and fauna, an interesting variety of birdlife, as well as the odd crocodile or two at the lakes. Azura Benguerra is close to the reefs in the Bazaruto archipelago, whose marine life and corals are often cited as the best off the East Coast of Africa. Seasonal visits from whale sharks, manta rays and humpback whales are complemented by regular sightings of bottlenose dolphins, turtles, reef sharks, stingrays, devil rays and moray eels. Some of the best big game, reef and bill fishing in the Indian Ocean can be found here, including marlin, sailfish and tuna, mackerel, dorado, and barracuda.

Ranging from afro-contemporary Infinity Beach Villas to the more private residential atmosphere of the Villa Amizade, featured in Conde Nast Traveller’s ‘Best Beach Villas in the World’, the handbuilt villas blend modern chic with all that is traditional in Mozambique. The creature comforts you would expect from a luxury boutique resort are there, set off by locally sourced wooden beams and traditional artwork beneath a thatched jekka roof. Nestled amidst indigenous gardens with a pool at every villa, each one is just footsteps from the beach, yet designed with seclusion in mind.

At Azura Benguerra, eclectic dining is all part of the experience, from breakfast at the water’s edge, or a picnic on a remote sand island, to dining on a candlelit beach beneath the stars. Butler-hosts take huge pride in their innovative dining set-ups to make your stay special. Menus are based on what is fresh and available, with a focus on light meals, simple ingredients, and lots of fresh fish and seafood. It’s a simple, understated affair.

Azura Benguerra’s Spa has a double treatment room located right on the beach. Browse the collection of handcrafted artefacts, designer clothing and jewellery at the Trading Store. The mod cons are there too if you need them, with TV and Internet discreetly tucked away in the library.

Guests receive a free Land Rover island drive, sunset cruise on a 40ft traditional dhow, and a 15-minute refresher massage on arrival.

Azura Benguerra has a PADI 5 Star Dive Centre with top of the range Scubapro equipment as well as a training pool and a full range of training courses.

Snorkelling at the world famous Aquarium at 2 Mile Reef, or Punto Dondo is an experience not to be missed.

For big game fishing, Azura Benguerra caters for beginners and those more experienced. It operates a strict tag and release policy on protected species. Choose to go trawling with local guides or with specialist fishing guides who offer saltwater fly fishing, jigging for Giant Trevally and other specialist techniques.
